SAYAHAN FALLS of SITIO MAGLAHUG, BRGY. GAAS, ORMOC, LEYTE

Most people are apt to go to the beach and do island hopping during summer, but for us who had almost visited all the island destinations in Leyte, we opt to search for places that were yet unexplored by many.

…Then and there, we discovered the newly-opened eco-tourism site in Brgy. Gaas, Ormoc, Leyte - the Sayahan Falls.

Trekking Adventure! 

Since Brgy. Gaas is located atop a mountain, one would need to hike down from the top to the falls’ location. Took us more or less thirty (30) minutes to reach the Sayahan Falls. You will pass by some small cascades and streams while on your way there.

Notes:

• Make sure you are physically fit and in complete gears – wear shoes, leggings.
• Make sure to prepare all your needs for a long trekking adventure (e.g. water, towel, etc.)
• Please be CAUTIOUS and WARY.

That long hike was worth it! Capture good shots in every angle. Make sure to bring your action and HD water cameras to get a picture-perfect snap of Sayahan Falls.

Cool Waters! 

Of course everyone will certainly love the cold waters. Since summer is getting hotter everyday, visiting the spot could be one of your best options! Dip into its icy waters; swim along the current; and if you want to need some shower, one is actually allowed to get near the heavy drips. But make sure not to do any risky acts that are perilous and death-defying.

DID YOU KNOW?

• The falls was named Sayahan from the local word “Saya” o “Palda” which means skirt; Sayahan Falls actually looks like a ‘long, giant, skirt’.
• Sayahan Falls is about a hundred feet.
• Sayahan Falls was opened to public on March 18, 2017 through the effort of the Municipality of Ormoc City.

TRAVEL GUIDE

IF YOU ARE FROM MANILA OR CEBU:

There are actually daily flights from Manila to Tacloban and Cebu to Tacloban. If you're from Manila, the flight takes at least an hour and twenty (20) minutes. If you're from Cebu, air travel takes about forty five (45) minutes or less. After you arrived at Tacloban Domestic Airport (San Jose, Tacloban City), go to Tacloban City Bus Terminal via taxicab or transfer service.

At Tacloban City Bus Terminal, look for vans or buses which transports to Ormoc City. Travel takes more than two (2) hours from Tacloban. 

Via Cebu City

If you are from Cebu City and would like to get to Leyte via ferryboats, you can take the Cebu-Ormoc route and purchase tickets from ferry outlets in Cebu City (via large transports or fast crafts). Sea travel takes at least seven (7) hours for large passenger ships and just three (3) hours for fast crafts.

How to get there?

(1) At the Ormoc City terminal, ride a jeepney going to Brgy. Gaas. Tell the driver to drop you off at Sitio Maglahug.

Notes:

• There is only one (1) vehicle that transports to Brgy. Gaas. Make sure to catch the jeepney before 10 am as it leaves around 10 or 11 in the morning. Travel takes more or less an hour from the city proper. 
• If unlucky and unable to get aboard on time,

Option 1: Ride a multicab going to Lake Danao. Cabs are located near the seaport area. (Fare - P40)

You may contact Ma’am Riza Vinculado (0948-475-9666) as she may be able to help you find a habal-habal service to Sitio Maglahug from Lake Danao.

From Lake Danao to Sitio Maglahug – takes about more than thirty (30) minutes habal-habal ride.

Option 2: From Brgy. Simangan, you’ll find habal-habal drivers that could transport you to Brgy. Gaas. However, the fare reaches upto P150 per head as the sitio is very far from the city proper.

(2) If you’ll bring your own car/service, the road to the destination is accessible 25 kilometers from the city proper. You’ll pass by San Pablo, Luna, Dolores, Milagro and Lake Danao going to Brgy. Gaas.

Registration

• Entrance Fee is P20.00 per person.
• Tourist Guide is P300 for every five (5) persons. Please contact Kuya Ramil Villos, our friendly guide to Sayahan Falls (0950-262-2909)
• Cut-off time for registration is until 2 pm only. The tourism center will not entertain guests after 2 pm as it is not advisable to hike back from the destination at night.

Other notes:

• Bring your own trash bags. Segregate your wastes into biodegradable and non-biodegradable. Bring your own garbage.
• Do not litter or dump your rubbish at Sayahan Falls.
• Do not leave any non-biodegradable wastes and cigarette butts on the mountains, forests, streams, ponds, and natural pools. Non-biodegradable such as synthetic materials (e.g. plastic bags) emit toxic pollutants during long-term exposure to air, light or water.
• Do not destroy or damage the trees and other plants.
• Alcoholic drinks and strong distilled liquors are prohibited at the site.
• Sidetrip after Sayahan Falls – visit the clear and green waters of Lake Danao.

1. Kalanggaman Island, Palompon, Leyte

Kalanggaman is undeniably Palompon’s best beach destination. Do not forget to take pictures on its long and snowy sandbar, and dip on its pellucid, luminous waters. Be sure to stay at the island overnight so you won’t miss the evident descent of the sun below the horizon; the blinking stars at night; and the aurora’s illustrious rays that lights up the island the next day.

2. Canigao Island, Matalom, Leyte

Canigao is an islet located just 15 minutes away from the port of Matalom, Southern Leyte via passenger or pumpboat. Canigao island brags its floury white sand and clear waters with beautiful tropical sea creatures. You can actually tour around this small island just for thirty (30) minutes. The island was often called as the “Little Boracay” of Matalom, Leyte by the locals.

3. Cuatro Islas, Inopacan, Leyte

Cuatro Islas (Four Islands) are the four island destinations in Leyte which is very popular among local tourists. The three islands namely Digyo, Apid, and Mahaba Islands are situated an hour boat ride off the coast of Inopacan, Leyte. The fourth island which is the Himokilan, however, was part of the next town, Hindang, Leyte.

4. San Pedro Island, Hinunangan, Southern Leyte

The twin islands of Hinunangan namely San Pablo and San Pedro Island were locally popular in Leyte. If by chance you’ve been to Sambawan Island in Biliran or the famous Kalangggaman Island of Palompon but had cost you so much penny, I am sure you’ll surely enjoy the clear and virgin waters here the way you enjoy your stay at those islands too, but in cheap and discounted prices.

5. San Pablo Island, Hinunangan, Southern Leyte

The clear and cool waters’ enticing and will surely tempt you to jump off the ridge and enjoy the sea! And talking about clear waters, well yes it was very clear. You’ll see different fish species and other aquatic craniate vertebrates – fish capable of gliding flights through their large pectoral wings; scombroid fishes; school of anchovies swimming underneath the beach cottage; big fishes best for aquarium display, and many more. Marine life is so abundant here.

6. Canuay Island, Babatngon, Leyte

Coral bits make up the white sand of the island and mangroves set rest on the other side. You can stroll and walk around this islet and swim on its clear waters but only on specific portions where waves won’t crush you down at the shore.

No need to travel long from the city to find a serene place to relax! Just more than an hour ride from the city of Tacloban, you can find Da-o Balay Kawilan located in Sabang, Dulag, Leyte, the idyllic pastoral place for your kind of weekend getaway.

Just like the San Juan by the Bay and Floating Resto inSta. Rita, Samar and the San Jose Skimboarding Camp in San Jose, Dulag, ABS-CBN Lingkod Kapamilya Foundation established the Da-o Balay Kawilan of Sabang, Dulag, Leyte as part of its community based sustainable tourism and Bantay Kalikasan project, in partnership with the Municipality of Dulag, ABS-CBN Corporation and through the generous donors of Sagip Kapamilya. This is to promote eco-tourism in the area, and to furnish livelihoods to many locals.

Da-o Balay Kawilan offers a notable countryside experience featuring Leyte as a provincial eco-tourism site. With just an entrance fee of P20.00 per head, you can now explore the area and unwind for some time, relieving stress from work and worries.

Entrance Fee: P20 – Adults/P15 – Senior Citizens/P10 – Kids

The locals in-charge were so friendly, glowingly smiled and greeted us warmly with “Good afternoon ma’am!” ‘though they were busy at the garden.

This place is actually located at the beach close to a river. The place has a wide fish pen or pond set on the river surrounded by floating cottages obviously made of dented bamboo stems and nipa fruticans or palms. Fishing will be allowed soon, according to the in-charge.

You can rest on cozy seats inside those cottages, or lie on these comf'table sofas for awhile. 

Kayaking is also available and you can order some snacks at the counter if you haven’t brought any. But still, it is best to bring your own food since the public resto may not provide all your desired orders.

Tacloban City

Note: You’ll see a Da-o Balay Kawilan signboard along the highway. Enter that road going there. As you travel straight to the beach, you need to enter the Sabang Daguitan Surf Camp – the road to Da-o starts here.  

If you are from Tacloban City, this signboard is situated at the left side.

CEBU CITY VIA BAYBAY CITY

If you are from Cebu City and would like to get to Leyte via ferryboats, you can take the Cebu-Baybay route via large sea transports and purchase tickets from ferry outlets in Cebu City. Sea travel takes at least seven (7) hours for large passenger ships. The city’s bus terminal is just near the port area so you can directly ride vans or buses bound for Tacloban City so you'll be able to pass by Dulag, Leyte.

Mahaplag Inland Resort

Location: Malinao, Mahaplag, Leyte

The resort was ornamented with flowering plants and small trees and the cirque-shaped pool has a wide circumference, occupying the resort with wooden chalets around, a small slide, and a bridge at the center.

Note: The resort also offers overnight accommodations at their mini hotel located just right next to the pool area.

Cold Spring Resorts in Burauen, Leyte

Burauen, Leyte became one of the popular destinations in the province because of the spring resorts located here. Well thanks to social media, every Facebook share and posts helped this unknown place become a famous destination now – people posted their photos of family outings and get-togethers, Cansiboy Burabod Mountain Resort or Pine’s Farm Resort as venues, located at Brgy. Cansiboy, and Brgy. Abuyugon, Burauen, Leyte, respectively. 

A. Cansiboy Burabod Mountain Resort

The resort has a man-made pool with spring waters coming exclusively from mountain peaks. The amount of spring water it pours down to the hillside probably depends on the water pressure in the aquifer or the amount of rainwater.

Note: There are actually two sets of pool. The other was at the lower part of the mountainside which is managed by the local government. Cansiboy Burabod Mountain Resort, on the other hand, is a privately-owned resort.

The water was very, very cold. I can’t even swim properly coz I was shivering badly. The water was icy, but definitely not in a sub-zero point. I think you need to splash yourself a bit first. This gives your body a chance to react more than if you jump straight into the pool or you can also do some research to get some tips on how you’ll improve your tolerance to cold water – for some who want cool swims.

B. Pine’s Farm Resort

The pool was designed with large rocks, coated with white, snowy shade to make it look like little icebergs. (Arctic feels!)

So many people visited the resort last Easter Sunday (2016), so we just went to the other side to get a quick dip of the water. It was so crowded and we got no place to stay.

Notes:

• It is best to rent a vehicle (if you don't have one) going to these resorts. Only few passenger vehicles pass in this area.
• You can bring your own food and drinks. No corkage fee.

Sea travel takes at least seven (7) hours for large passenger ships and just three (3) hours for fast crafts. The city’s bus terminal is just beside the port area so you can directly go to the terminal and ride vans bound for Tacloban City Terminal. You can look for vans or buses bound for Burauen, Leyte once you arrive at Tacloban City.

Note: There are also Cebu-Leyte routes via Maasin, Baybay, and Hilongos, Leyte.
